Seven members from Club Ultimate traveled to Montreat College in Black Mountain, N.C. Saturday afternoon for their first off-campus ultimate frisbee game this season. The hour and a half game ended in a loss for Milligan, but proved to be a good experience for all players.
"I think it is important for us to travel so that we play better as a team," next year's Club Ultimate President sophomore James Terry said. "Plus, it is fun to play other schools."
Milligan started off the first half strong, leading by three points. Their 3-2-2 zone proved to be a successful defense strategy. However, Montreat quickly reorganized their approach by making short, quick throws down the field. Montreat came back and led the first half 7-4.
Unfortunately, Milligan had no extra players to substitute in, whereas Montreat had two complete sub groups. Milligan's team became tired more quickly than Montreat's.
Just as the second half began, a heavy rain started to fall. Teams continued to play, though low visibility and slippery hands led to numerous turnovers. Both teams played similar to the previous half. Milligan's team could not keep up with Montreat's rested players. Montreat won the game with a 15-11 lead.
"I think we would have done better if more members were able to come out and play," sophomore Grant Gibson said.
Though this will be the only away game played this year, Club Ultimate has big expectations for 2010-2011 seasons.
"Next year I foresee a more structured practice schedule and two games in the fall," Terry said. "We hope to play at least four games in the spring."
Despite the loss for Milligan, Club Ultimate enjoyed their time on Montreat's campus.
"I felt like the game was a learning experience and it was nice getting to know new people who enjoy playing frisbee," Gibson said.
