Seventeen people attended the Institutional Advancement Committee Meeting last Thursday, including members of the Board of Trustees. Leaders from Institutional Advancement, Annual Fund and General Development, Alumni Relations, Church Relations and Planned Giving departments gave a brief recap of the events that have occurred since the meeting in October. Then they briefly spoke of the steps that will be taken in the months to come.
During the meeting, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Bill Greer, introduced a new assistant to the president, Gary Allan Taylor, who will replace Bob Young upon his retirement. Taylor has most recently worked with the Focus on the Family magazine, and during that tenure, he headed the "Truth Project."
Next, Greer discussed how the total giving for the year has exceeded $4 million.
Greer announced the latest major gift, a $500,000 donation for the renovation of Seeger Chapel. Jim Martin donated the money in honor of his wife, Mary B. Martin, whom the auditorium will be renamed for.
"We're delighted to have a bit of his generosity come our way in the form of seats for Seeger Chapel," Greer said.
The money will be used to put in new, more comfortable seats, as well as aisle lighting and handicapped seating. Additionally, the guardrails on the balcony will be raised. The renovation will be an eight-week project, and will begin over Christmas break this year.
There is never an eight-week period that Seeger is free of students, however.
"We may have to have Chapel in shifts in Gregory," Greer said.
"I'm not sure what we'll do. Hopefully we'll have Seeger back open in early February."
Rhajon Smith, Annual Fund officer, reported that the Annual Fund organization is now deliberately focusing on working with smaller donors. The number of donors has increased within the past year to 1,077, and over 50 percent of donors have increased their giving from last year.
The Phone- a- thon last year brought in over $45,000, and was mainly comprised of pledges made over the phone.
