Forty Milligan students traveled to Ridgecrest Retreat Center in North Carolina this past weekend to conclude Spiritual Renewal Week. It was a time to get away from campus to take part in worship, prayer and fellowship. Senior Justin Larson, juniors Chase Boyer and Josh Little, and freshman Ryan Evans led the event.
"My expectation for the weekend was that God would show up and do his thing," said Boyer. "It would be a way to get away from the norm and focus on what God has in store for (Milligan) through those who want to do that."
The theme of the weekend was Colossians chapter 3. When preparing for the sessions, leaders reflected on the scripture and then discussed which part stuck out to them the most. Each speaker chose an idea to talk about, hoping to convey the overall message of leaving behind the past life and seeking a new life with God.
Freshman Taylor Ross and Colin Blowers led students in worship. Both played guitars and led the group in song, in prayer and in times of silence.
"We had a very mature group of students and everyone was really united," Evans said. "It was quite an experience gathering together and praising God in the unique ways that Taylor and Colin introduced."
After worship, students split into small groups to learn more about each other and to discuss questions about the scripture.
"I loved the small groups," junior Amanda Morrell said. "It allowed an opportunity to get to know people that you don't get to know at school," After the retreat ended, students and leaders said they enjoyed the event.
"I was to be able to just get away and reflect on God," freshman Derrick Rodgers said. "I realized what I need to be doing and what really needs to just be given up to God."
"The retreat was very encouraging for me," Larson said. "It was powerful to see so many (students) seeking after God earnestly and seeking a broken heart for their campus. The desire for it to be a true spiritual renewal was evident."
