Destination Unknown: Sycamore Shoals (video)
Sierra Summers
Issue date: 2/5/10 Section: Student Life
In this edition of Destination Unkown, junior Sierra Summers visits a place that is steeped in national as well as local history: Sycamore Shoals.
Now a State Historic Park, Sycamore Shoals played a prominent part in local history during the 18th century, as well as contributing to the American victory at the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War.
"This area is very rich in history, and we have a wonderful story to tell," said Chad Bogart, a seasonal interpretive ranger who helps introduce visitors to the park.
Sycamore Shoals boasts a reconstruction of a Revolutionary-War-era fort, where the park holds living history demonstrations.
"We offer many programs, most of which are free of charge," said Bogart. "Usually once a month we'll have living history down at the fort, and we'll hold a militia muster, and we do stuff like open-hearth cooking and musket demonstrations."
This weekend the park is holding a French-and-Indian War reenactment.
