Senior music major Erin Aubrey returned this semester with a record deal after spending time studying music at the Contemporary Music Center (CMC) in Martha's Vineyard.
Spending nearly an entire semester studying songwriting and other aspects of music performance, Aubrey worked to develop her own style. She recorded her first EP before signing a contract with a label, Offshore Entertainment group. Aubrey is currently working on establishing herself as an artist locally.
Aubrey began playing piano in first grade and has performed music most of her life. The CMC provided education and experiences that helped her improve skills in songwriting.
"I learned a lot in my time there, like how to write and perform music with a full band behind me which is something I have never done before," Aubrey said.
In addition to writing, singing and creating music, Aubrey hopes to become a music therapist, allowing her to give hope to all types of patients ranging from sick children to the mentally ill. She wants to share with others the same feeling of hope she receives from writing music.
Her advice to other aspiring musicians is to keep writing.
"Someone once told me that for every 100 bad songs you write, you will have written one good song," Aubrey said. She also explained the importance of playing with experienced musicians - artists are "only as good as the people they practice with. If you don't practice with those who are better than you, you can never grow as an artist."
Aubrey is set to release her first album in summer of 2011.
