Students and faculty received an email from Dean Matson last night stating that the library was being closed immediately due to an issue with new power poles and some water damage.
During this week's rain, a ceiling tile in the library basement filled with water and caved in. The water spilled into the old computer lab, where books left over from the fall semester's book sale were being stored.
"There was no damage done to the book collection or any of the electronic devices," Director of Library Services Gary Daught said. "There was no real damage at all."
The physical plant traced the leak to a new electrical conduit, a tube or trough that directs water flow in order to protect electrical wires. Causing the library's power outage in December, the power poles between the library and the chapel snapped, pulling out the electric conduit. The poles and conduit were replaced during Christmas break.
Rainwater trickled in through the new conduit, leaking onto the basement ceiling until a tile could no longer support the weight.
Massey Electric came to inspect the leak and make sure that the water had not compromised the building's power supply.
"The library reopened its doors this morning at 8 a.m. and all services are at full speed," Daught said.
