Two teams were locked in a tie atop the AAC women's basketball rankings on Wednesday afternoon. Milligan stood atop the AAC women's basketball rankings on Wednesday night. Their 78-71 victory over Union College took their record to 3-0 against conference rivals and 8-3 overall.
The Lady Buffs scored 40 points and held the Union Lady Bulldogs to 29 points. Offensively, the Lady Buffs did a great job spreading the ball out, as 8 different players were able to score. Defensively, the Lady Buffs let 4 different Lady Bulldog players score.
The Lady Bulldogs came out strong in the second half but were not able to recover from the 11 point deficit from the first half.
"It took a lot of energy to win the game," said Milligan head coach Rich Aubrey. "We knew Union would make a pushback at us, and they did…(have) a good run and hit some (3-pointers) to crawl back into it."
The lady Bulldogs made 6 of their 15 attempted 3-pointers in the second half en route to Union outscoring Milligan in the second half 42-38.
Heather Mandela, a junior All-American, led the team in scoring with 26 points and pulled down 7 total rebounds. Sophomore Alisha Mainer recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and bringing down 11 rebounds. Jaimee Hill, freshman, scored 10 points and had 7 total rebounds.
The Steve Lacy Field house hushed late in the second half when senior Brittany Kilgore went down with a knee injury.
"We are all concerned about (Kilgore). You hate to see anybody get hurt, but it gets you in the heart when it is your teammate," Aubrey said. At the time of print, there was no diagnosis to her injury.
The Lady Buffs will host Covenant College this Saturday; tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
