At the Western Carolina Invitational for the AAC Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, the women’s team finished second with 94 points, falling to King College. The men’s track team finished third.
On Thursday night both the men and the women swept the 10K. Freshman Austin Ellis took first place, going 32:27 while sophomore Lili Zaldana achieved a national A standard with a time of 38:28.
On Friday freshman Gillian Giffen set a conference record with her 18:35 win in the 5K. Meanwhile, seniors Jacklyn Talbert and Nicole Moore claimed first and second place, respectively, in the 1500-meter race.
On the men’s side, senior Aaron Wood won the 800-meter race with a personal best time of 1:52.22. Sophomores Nathan Bordelon and James Butcher and freshman Stephen Feryus earned personal bests in the 5K.
“I think the team did really well,” said Butcher. “We had a lot of personal records and we had some people qualify for nationals in May. We really peaked.”
Freshman Tanner Payne and sophomore Tara Moore won the AAC men’s and women’s titles in the discus throw.
