President Don Jeanes announced in chapel on Thursday morning that Milligan received a major gift from Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Gilliam this week to fund the construction of the new student wellness center.

"We've been working on this project for about a year, and we've also been working on funding," Jeanes said in a press conference held yesterday afternoon.

Richard Gilliam, of Charlottesville, Va., contributed to the capital campaign as a way to honor his father, Marvin Gilliam, who was a 1938 Milligan graduate. The wellness center will now be named the Gilliam Wellness Center.

"The family wants to do something to honor his memory and his experience that he had at Milligan College ," Jeanes said in the press conference.

Preparation for the 6,400 square foot facility will begin in June and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2010. Burleson Construction Company, Inc. in Johnson City will be doing the work.

The building will be constructed on the lot behind Kegley and Quillen Halls and will contain a student recreation area, cardiovascular equipment, free weights and two classrooms for aerobics and fitness classes. The offices for the campus nurse and intramurals director will also be housed in the building.

"This facility is in direct response to student needs and represents a significant lead gift toward our capital campaign, which is still in its early phases," said Jeanes in an e-mail to campus.

The capital campaign currently taking place has three stages: wellness, which will include the new Wellness Center's construction; scholarship, which will allow for library renovations and tuition reimbursements for students and academic programs; and community, which may include renovations to Webb Hall and other campus buildings.

As a part of efforts to make the campus more environmentally friendly, the new wellness building will be certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and will contain sky-lights, solar tubes and other environmentally-friendly designs.

"This is our first effort to have a green building and we're thankful that we can do that," Jeanes said in the press conference.

In addition to the construction of the Wellness Center, areas around the building face improvements, including pavement of the Webb Hall parking lot, a sidewalk, plus guttering and lighting adjustments.

Equipment for the Wellness Center will come from a gift from Denny and Cindy Mayes of Alcoa, Tenn., who both attended Milligan in the 1970's. Denny also serves on the Board of Trustees.
