Director of Library Services Gary Daught announced on April 16 through a campus-wide e-mail that Library Archivist Ginger Dillon will soon be leaving the library staff.

Dillon’s choice to leave the library came with her decision to move to the Washington, D.C. area to be closer to her fiancé, William. Dillon’s last day will be May 15, and she and William will be married the last week of that month.

“There’s a time when you realize in your career that you need to see what’s next,” Dillon said. “I wanted to make sure the semester was closed out, but it was time to start thinking in that direction.”

Dillon, a 2002 Milligan graduate, began working in the library as a freshman work study student. She left when she graduated, but returned to serve part time at the reference desk when she pursued her graduate degree at East Tennessee State University.

In late 2005 Dillon became the official archivist and worked both in the library and the field house to complete 40 hours a week. In August 2007 she was employed full time in the library. She majored in humanities at Milligan and has a master’s of arts and liberal studies with an emphasis in archives from ETSU.

Dillon currently has dual responsibilities as not only the archivist but as the technical services librarian.

“I’m in charge of collecting and preserving materials and helping people have access to materials related to Milligan’s history, from Mrs. Hopwood’s dishes to presidential papers,” said Dillon.

As the technical services librarian, she orders new materials for the library and helps get the new books, DVDs and other materials ready for the shelf.

Now she will be looking for jobs in Northern Virginia or the D.C. area.

“There are a lot of archivist jobs available with all the national institutes,” Dillon said. “There are also a lot of non-profits in that area and I have wanted to see if that would be something I would be interested in doing. I’ll be exploring a variety of options.”

Dillon said she will be sad to leave the library because she enjoys working with Milligan’s faculty and staff, but there is a time to move on.

“It’s going to be tough to see her go, but I’m glad she’s going for good reasons and to start a new life,” said Public Services Librarian Jeff Harbin, who worked with Dillon as a library work study. “She’s turned the archives into something that is a more viable tool. By decreasing the quantity, she’s made it a more quality collection.”
